Every crush or idol you’ve had is a mirror.
They point to your qualities that you’ve repressed and refuse to claim for yourself.
This is something Jung called the “Golden Shadow.”
Ego isn’t just “I’m better,” it’s also “I’m not enough.”
And it’s as much about what you think you are, as what you don’t think you are.
We don’t just repress our darkness, but also our greatness.
Practice
You can try it yourself
Write down 3 people you’ve had crushes on or idolize.
Ask yourself, what is the part in them that you admire most?
How do you disown that aspect of yourself?
If you fully owned that part of yourself, what part of your ego would have to die?
